The Adjunct Crisis in Higher Education: Building Awareness Locally and Nationally

sadiereynoldsby Sadie Reynolds

On February 25th faculty and students across the nation raised awareness about the issue of contingent labor in higher education as part of “National Adjunct Walkout Day.” The event was a resounding success, with faculty at colleges and universities across the nation and beyond participating in solidarity. CCFT encouraged Cabrillo instructors to participate by sharing statistics or film clips with students to educate them on this important issue. Several of you reported educating students on the issue as part of NAWD, and we thank you. According to the map below (from nationaladjunct.tumblr.com), you were joined by colleagues at more than one hundred institutions across the nation, and beyond. The over-reliance on adjunct workers in higher education has reached crisis proportions. The attention brought on by NAWD is long overdue. Stay tuned. CCFT’s Part-Time Committee and the Committee on Political Education will continue to encourage advocacy and awareness work on this very important issue.
