Learning Skills Program Update

Standby spaces are still available for learning disabilities (LD) testing. Students who come in or are referred for testing may sign up right away for an intake this semester or may be waitlisted and tested at the start of next semester. The testing process is a half-unit class, takes about six-eight hours, and consists of a three-hour group appointment (the intake) followed by 4-5 one-hour individual appointments with an LD specialist. We work with students’ existing schedules in making the appointments. Students who are eligible for the program may receive services such as test accommodations (extra time, distraction-reduced setting), note takers, permission to use recording devices and/or calculators, alternate media and assistive technology, and access to the Sir Richard Griffiths Learning Lab (as funding allows).

If you wish to refer a student, emphasize the benefits of LD eligibility: possibly better grades, a community of other students with similar difficulties (knowing you’re not alone), more efficient learning strategies, etc. We have a video on our website that describes our program and the testing process. It’s a good introduction for students you’d like to refer. There’s also a self-screener on the website, available in bilingual format. Interested students should call 479.6220 to sign up for an intake and to fill out the pre-intake screening form. You can also walk students over to our office outside room 1073 in the LRC at the back of the library. We look forward to seeing you.
