What Makes Quality Community College Education?
A Community Forum with Cabrillo Faculty, Students, and Community Members

Tuesday, November 12, 6-8pm
Sesnon House, Cabrillo College

California’s Master Plan for Education, passed into law in 1960, envisioned access for all Californians to a quality Community College education. In the context of dwindling resources and massive spending cuts as a result of the 2008 economic downturn, we have moved farther and farther away from that vision. Despite the passage of Prop 30 in 2012, which earmarked billions in spending for education, students continue to face considerable challenges related to resources and access. CCFT and Faculty Senate have joined forces to organize a Community Forum to discuss the shifting mission of colleges and what can be done to promote and preserve access and resources for a quality education for students at Cabrillo and across the state.

A panel of experienced Cabrillo College faculty will discuss how California arrived at the current historical moment, what they do well in the current context in providing quality education, and what barriers they face in the coming decade to continuing to so. Panel speakers will address the unique circumstances of four different student populations affected by current trends—lifelong learners, basic skills students, transfer students, and career technical students. Student audience members will be asked what successes they have had in accessing necessary resources and what barriers to access and resources they have experienced. The Forum will close with a facilitated discussion of what can be done promote and preserve quality education at Cabrillo in the coming decade.

  • Michael Mangin: History Instructor & Faculty Senate President
  • Sarah Albertson: Theatre Arts Instructor, CCFT Representative
  • Joseph Carter: English Instructor, Basic Skills & Learning Communities Advisory Council Member
