COPE-ingCCFT's COPE: Join Us!
With elections just seven weeks away and mail-in ballots going out in two weeks, CCFT's Committee on Political Education (COPE) needs your support. This election is historic, and the outcome will have a major impact here at Cabrillo—and statewide. Props 30 and 32 will hugely impact us as teachers. Our goal in the coming weeks is to educate Cabrillo faculty and students on Props 30 and 32 and register as many of us as possible to vote. Toward that end, we are engaging in a teach the budget campaign, phone banks, and voter registration. But the degree of our efficacy in educating Cabrillo students and faculty and in getting out the vote will be directly proportional to how many of you participate in the effort. Please join COPE's efforts by donating an hour or more of your time (contact info below)! These propositions are very likely to pass or fail on a very small margin. The work we do at Cabrillo could be the difference!
Here are a few ways you can contribute to the effort:
- Teach the Budget. Maya Bendotoff created a PowerPoint presentation providing information on the CA budget that goes over recent cuts and reviews the Cabrillo budget with or without the passage of Prop 30. Please consider showing it in your class (you may also use sections or modify). As faculty members we are prohibited from advocating a particular political stance or action. But providing information and supporting students in developing their own analysis is our job. (not here; add to sep box if you want)
- Phone banking: We are holding phone banks from 6:30-8:30 on Oct. 4th, 9th, 18th, and 23rd. The goal is to call all CCFT members to encourage a yes vote on prop 30 and a no vote on prop 32. We are also asking members to contribute to the effort by donating time or joining COPE.
- Voter Registration: We will table on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30pm (lower campus) and on Thursdays from 12-2pm (in the quad) through the third week in October (Oct. 22 is the voter registration deadline). The focus is registering students to vote, but we will also provide information on Props 30 and 32. Please sign up for the remaining dates: 10/3, 10/4, 10/10, 10/11, 10/17, and 10/18. Let us know if you would like us to place voter registration cards in your campus mailbox.
Joining COPE is another way to contribute. COPE members sign up to have a small donation deducted from their paychecks each month to be used for political purposes -- e.g., donating to board candidates, the reelworks film festival, or student organizing. Donations are commonly in the range of $2 to $20/month).
